Why "FLO Collection"?Flo Collection plays on the period euphemism of "aunt flo" as well as our much beloved saying to "go with the flow". But there's more! FLO stands for Foldable, Leak Free and zerO compromise. We make period underwear that looks and feels great without compromising on ethics, sustainability and function. You can fold our flagship style, the Lilly, completely in on itself which creates a self contained bundle. FYI, our instagram handle @TheFlowDownLow, brings you humorous takes on the menstrual cycle. Come and follow along!
-
You have a patent?!Besides making sure that the materials we use are top notch and perfecting the fit with our local makers, we took it one step further and added our patented pouch. Our pouch allows you to fold the underwear in on itself and create a self-contained, mess free bundle. Simply use, fold, and forget. When you are ready to, unfold and rinse them in cold water, before washing them in the washing machine.
-
How do you fold them into the self contained bundle? It's super easy! See a visual representation below.
-
How does Flo Collection period underwear work? Our top layer is a moisture wicking stretch fabric, printed in Australia and made from recycled polyester. You can see what's "flowing on" because our gusset isn't just black. Our core fabric holds is so absorbent that it takes not even 2 seconds to absorb ten times its weight. It soaks up 20 times faster than materials such as bamboo, cotton, or hemp knits. The fabric has a waterproof backing to protect you from leaks, while still allowing your bits to breathe. Tested with real periods on real bodies, our flagship style, the Lilly, holds more than 3 tampons worth or period blood.
-
How long can I wear Flo Collection period underwear for?If your flow is considered “regular”, which means you'd need to change your tampon every 4 hours, you can use one pair of Flo Collection period underwear for up to 12 hours. If your flow is lighter, this time off course expands. We like to wear them on the days leading up to our periods too, in case any of spotting. You'll know when it's time to change, because the moisture wicking top layer will have worked overtime and you won't feel as nice and dry anymore.
-
What's my size?Check out our size chart! We use buttery soft, Aussie made modal for the main body of our Flo Collection underwear. They are designed to fit snugly, yet feel comfortable. Contact us if your size isn't reflected.
-
What does "made well" mean to you?Being Australian made means we can be sure that everyone is paid fairly, their place of work is safe and we do not cut corners. Quality is at the core of our brand and this extends to the the amazing humans that make our garments. We cannot compete with brands that are stocked on supermarket shelves when it comes to price, but they cannot compete with us when it comes to producing a high quality garment that looks and feels great without relying on underpaid labour and substandard materials.
-
How many pairs of period underwear do I need?It totally depends on your preference and if you want to use them as a backup with your cup or tampon, or bleed directly into them only. Keep the timing in mind too - while they can easily be washed in the washing machine with your standard wash loads (just keep it below 40 C), we do not recommend tumble drying to preserve their fit. So while the fabric dries quickly, it doesn’t take mere minutes to do so. If you plan to only use period undies, we’d recommend at least three pairs. One to wear while one is in the wash and one is drying. If you’re away from a washing machine during the day and have a heavier flow and change throughout the day, you’d likely need more. The great thing about Flo Collection underwear is that they are comfy and look good, so you could also just add them into your standard underwear rotation to justify stocking up.
-
How do you dye your patterned gusset? Our patterned gusset (featuring hearts shaped by blood drops, we think it's super cute and on topic!) is created by sublimation printing. Our supplier is based in Victoria and the fabric is sourced from Italy, but printed in Australia. Heat and pressure turn sublimation inks into gas, penetrating the material and leaving a permanent imprint. It becomes one with the fabric and doesn't affect it's effectiveness to wick away moisture. If you know an Australian alternative to our Italian fabric (we need it to stretch, be lightweight, and be OEKO tex or similar certified) please share!
-
How does period underwear work?Period underwear looks and feels like a normal pair of undies, but the magic lies within the gusset. The top layer wicks away moisture to keep the wearer feeling fresh and dry while the core absorbs and holds onto the moisture. You should not need to use anything else, simply wear the period underwear. When you are ready to, you simply give them a rinse in cold water (to help the blood evacuate) and wash them in the washing machine.
-
When can I use period underwear?Flo Collection period underwear can be worn by anyone who would benefit from having more absorbent underwear. That includes support for LBL (light bladder leakage), for postpartum bleeding, for increased discharge (e.g. from pessaries during fertility treatment), or you can wear them during workouts to feel dry and protected. We love wearing them in the lead up to our periods too, to catch any potential spotting.
-
Is period underwear invasive? The great thing about period underwear is that it is non invasive. Simply wear it instead of your usual underwear and you're good to go! Our founder Flo was a fan of cups, but could not always use them, because they seemed to exaggerate her period pain. If you can handle cups and discs, but want an extra piece of mind, you can use period underwear to catch any potential drops. Period underwear doesn’t stop your period blood, you'll feel the flow of menstruation leaving your body, which might be unsettling for some people at first. We think it's pretty cool to be more in tune with your body that way.
-
Who can use period underwear?Period underwear is a great alternative to single use items like tampons or pads. You can use period underwear by themselves or as extra protection. Flo Collection period underwear have been vigorously tested and can hold more than 3 tampons.
-
Is period underwear hygienic?Yes, just make sure you wash and dry them properly. Don't wear them while damp and make sure to air dry them before putting them away. Do not use bleach or fabric softeners.
-
Why do you produce in Australia? Isn't it expensive?Quality is a core value at Flo Collection. This expands beyond "simply" the quality of the garment, but also includes the quality of life for our team and suppliers. We feel that by being able to physically visit and collaborate with our makers, we can ensure that they are fairly treated and remunerated. Too many businesses have been built on the back of underpaid or even unpaid workers, and we don't want to be one of them.
-
Do you produce any of your products overseas? All of our production, including all production steps are done in NSW, Australia.
-
How do you test the period underwear?Being made in Australia has it’s perks - not only are we supporting our local makers, but they are also supporting us and are able to tweak the design until it fits and functions perfectly. Our patented design has changed quite dramatically before we were finally able to share it with you. Part of this was making sure we tested our product with real periods shed by real bodies, as well as measuring how much liquid it can hold safely.
-
Why "Soothe Pack"?You can cool it down by putting it safely into a closed plastic bag and freezing it for 1 hour, or heat it up by putting it into the microwave for 1 minute. It gets hot, so please handle with care. Some ideas for cold use: - cool down on a hot day, add it to your forehead or neck - relax with it covering your eye(s) - cool down while commuting by playing with it like a fidget toy - add it into the Flo Collection underwear's patented pouch to get relief Some ideas for hot use (make sure to handle with care): - add it into the Flo Collection underwear's patented pouch to get some relief - use it as a hand warmer when it's cold (outside or in the office) - relax with it covering your eye(s)
-
Safety NoticeIf your Soothe Pack smells burnt at any point or you see holes in the fabric, stop using it as a heat pack right away. You can still use it as a cold pack in that case, but we'd prefer if you retired it. The cotton fabric can be turned into a rag or composted, and the Lupin seeds can be composted too.
-
Is it compostable?Yes! Please cut off the label (you can keep it as a memory or just add it to your landfill bin) and cut the cotton fabric into smaller bits. You can then throw the Lupin seeds as well as the cotton shreds into your compost bin!
-
How important is sustainability to you?Sustainability is one of our key values at Flo Collection. By using period underwear, you are making a more sustainable choice compared to using single use period products. We strongly believe that it's up to us to support you in that sustainable choice, so here is an overview of how we do this: - our materials are sourced locally where possible and do not contain toxins like PFAS (aka forever chemicals) which are harmful for you, but also for the planet - where we source from overseas, we ensure that the suppliers are certified (e.g. hold OEKO Tex Certifications) to minimise their strain on the environment - we make all garments in Australia, reducing our carbon foot print compared to having to fly them in (and helping to keep jobs local too!) - we do not add bits to our packaging that would just end up being thrown out (no swing tags, no plastic garment bags etc.) - you can reuse or compost our shipping mailers - our thank you/business cards are printed on recycled paper - our head office runs on solar power, including a battery that is in use when we work past sundown - our tissue paper is printed with eco friendly dyes, so you can reuse it, recycle it or compost it We'd love to hear from you what else we can do to support the planet and are open to collaborations.
-
How sustainable is period underwear?1 standard tampon or pad, filled with plastics, takes up to 800 years to breakdown in landfill. One pair of Flo Collection period underwear holds at least as much as three tampons or pads. That means you save three single use products every month, even if you only use period underwear once in your cycle, without washing and wearing them again. That is already saving 36 single use products a year. With the right care, you can use our period underwear for 5 years, meaning you saved 180 single use items from landfill, by just switching to wearing ONE pair of period underwear, once in your cycle. Since period underwear is washable and reusable, we'd estimate you use it at least 5 times during one cycle (considering you'd need to wash and wait for it to dry) which then saves 900 single use items over that underwear's life.
-
What do I do when my underwear has reached the end of its life? Please drop us a message if you're interested, we are working on a system to collect retired underwear and recycle them for you.
-
How sustainable is the Soothe Pack?We use Australian gown Lupin seeds for the filling, they are both lighter and hold heat better than wheat and other fillings. Also, we find the shape really fun and often use our Soothe Packs as fidget toys. Lupin seeds are a more eco friendly alternative since they require less water compared to wheat and also less fertiliser. The fabric we use is salvaged excess aka dead stock cotton, which makes our collections unique (once a fabric is gone, it's gone) and helps close the loop and save the fabric from landfill.
-
How much liquid is lost during one period? It’s generally quoted that 30 ml of blood is lost during one standard period. However, we find the notion of a “standard” period not ideal and the fact that period products are widely only tested with saline solution is just bizarre.

-
How do I clean the Soothe Pack?Spot clean only with a damp cloth, making sure the Lupin seeds on the inside stay dry where possible. If it smells burnt at any point or you see holes in the fabric, stop using it as a heat pack right away. You can still use it as a cold pack in that case, but we'd prefer if you recycled it.
