Progress > Perfection.

Updated: Sep 8

It’s more important to make progress than to be perfect at something. If we all tried our best, it has a much bigger impact than just a few of us being perfect.

When we posted about this on World Environment Day, it really resonated with you. Here’s an extended version. If I haven’t included your tips yet, please add them to the post here:

Please note: Beyond changing our personal habits, there is the obvious elephant in the room—big corporations not doing the right thing or greenwashing. We need to hold them accountable. One way you can do this is by using your money to vote. See tips on that below.

At Flo Collection, we are not yet a big player, but we are building our business with serious sustainability in mind from the ground up. You can read more about our business sustainability efforts here.

The Importance of Progress Over Perfection

Making progress is essential. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about taking steps forward. Each small action contributes to a larger change. This mindset can transform how we approach sustainability.

Romanticise Reusing

Reusing can actually provide a better experience than using new!

  • Keep cups keep beverages hotter for longer.

  • Insulated bottles maintain their contents colder for longer.

  • Food tastes better when eaten with real cutlery.

  • Washable napkins feel so much nicer than flimsy paper ones.

Coffee tastes better in a keep cup. It doubles as a soup bowl on a hike. Get a pretty one—it will motivate you to show it off.

How to Make It More Fun

  • Monogram your water bottle. Some brands allow you to choose this when you get one.

  • Get matching keep cups with your friends or partner. Make it fun to do the right thing.

  • Invest in period underwear that you look forward to using.

You have free will! Bring your favourite mug with you! (But keep it safe—just because it wants to see the world doesn’t mean it was made for adventure.)

Think Beyond the Intended Purpose

  • Did your water bottle start to leak after years of adventures? Give it a new purpose in your kid's mud kitchen.

  • I love painting empty containers to use them for plant propagation. Pretty and purposeful!

Level Up and Replace

Reusing one pair of period underwear can replace more than 100 single-use period products in just one year. It also eliminates the toxins you might potentially be exposed to! Read more about recent studies about tampons being toxic here.

Flo Collection makes it easier to choose a sustainable product that will last for years to come. They're better for you and better for the planet. At Flo Collection, we took it one step further. We make it easier to choose a sustainable product that will last for years to come because we make periods more manageable, less painful, and more empowered through our innovative design. Our underwear allows for hands-free heat and folds into a self-contained bundle.

Rent & Borrow

Have an event to attend? Use the opportunity to play dress-up without the price tag and buyer's remorse—rent an outfit! You’ll save space in your wardrobe too! Bring a mate and make it a fun event to try on different outfits, even the ones you wouldn’t dare to usually.

If you have a friend or family member who wears the same size as you, ask them! They would probably be thrilled and honoured to help out. When my sister comes to stay with me, the first thing I do is give her clothes that I think would look great on her. Whenever I stay with her, I pack extra light to have an excuse to borrow a fresh 'fit. There may not even be an occasion, but it's such a fun way to try new things without needing to commit.

Support Local

Buying from local businesses can help reduce emissions. It helps to keep and create local jobs. Keep an eye out for businesses certified by the Australian Made Campaign.

Flo Collection is proudly certified to be Australian made and owned. We make all of our garments and Soothe Packs in NSW, Australia.

Buy Second Hand

This is my favourite ‘loophole’. I won’t buy from brands that do not match my values, as I believe that every purchase you make is a vote for the world you want to live in. If it’s a second-hand find, it doesn’t support the brand (they'll never know!), and I get to feel good about saving items from potentially going to landfill.

Second-hand shopping can also be a lot cheaper than buying new and a lot more fun! It may be harder to find something specific, but you might be surprised by how many great outfits you can discover in op shops, vintage stores, and online.

ree

I also love second-hand shopping while away on holidays! Different areas hold different treasures, and things found while away hold even more memories.

It’s more important to make progress than to be perfect at something. Practise eventually makes "perfect," but making small steps towards being more sustainable every day can create a big impact.

Don't forget to vote with your purchases. Choose brands that pay their makers a fair wage, that reduce their impact on the environment, and that create quality products made to last. (Hint hint, Flo Collection ticks all those boxes).
